Why Your Lyrics Show Up Before the Vocals (and How to Fix Sync)
Lyrics appearing a second early, skipping lines, or drifting out of sync? Here's why lyric videos go out of sync and how to fix it, from line timing to word-level alignment.
Few things make a lyric video feel cheap faster than words that show up a second before they're sung, or a chorus that's still on screen while the next verse starts. Viewers notice. People trying to sing along notice more.
Here's why it happens and how to fix it.
The 5 common causes
1. Line timing instead of word timing
Most tools time lines, not words. A line starts when its first word starts and stays until the next line. If the singer takes a breath, holds a note, or starts the line late, the whole line is wrong by that amount. When the first word of a line comes in on an upbeat after a long gap, the line often appears a second or more early.
Fix: use word-level timing. Each word gets its own start and end, so the highlight follows the singer.
2. Transcription errors that shift everything after them
Auto-caption tools transcribe the song, then place the words they heard. When they mishear or skip a phrase, everything after it can slide, which is why lyrics in some auto-generated videos "skip ahead a few lines and stay out of sync for the rest of the song".
Fix: paste the real lyrics. Forced alignment only has to find known words in the audio, not guess them, so one hard phrase doesn't throw off the rest.
3. The song changed after the lyrics were timed
If you extended, trimmed or remixed a song (common with Suno and Udio), the old timings no longer match the new audio. Regenerating sometimes doesn't help because the old timing is reused.
Fix: re-time the lyrics against the final audio file, not the version you started with.
4. Dense mixes and effects
Distorted guitars, stacked harmonies, heavy reverb and screamed vocals make it harder for any model, or any person, to hear exactly where a word starts. Alignment can drift for a few lines in those sections.
Fix: use a tool that tells you which lines it's unsure about, and re-sync just those lines. Splitting long lines into shorter ones also helps.
5. Export doesn't match the preview
Some tools preview one way and export another: different frame rate, different fonts, or audio offset in the final file.
Fix: use a tool where the preview and the export are rendered by the same engine, and spot-check the first and last chorus of the exported file before posting.
How to check sync in 30 seconds
- Play the first line, the first chorus, and the last chorus.
- Watch the first word of each line. It should appear as the syllable starts, not before.
- Watch a long held note. The word should stay lit until the note ends.
- If one section is off but the rest is fine, it's a local problem (cause 4). If everything after a point is off, it's a transcription or edit problem (cause 2 or 3).
How we handle it in LyricVideoGenerator
We built LyricVideoGenerator around this exact problem:
- Word-level alignment from your lyrics. Paste the words and each one is aligned to the vocal. In our tests on real sung tracks, including rock and metal, word timing was typically within 50 ms, well under what a viewer notices.
- Unsure lines are marked yellow. If the aligner isn't confident, you see it before you export.
- Re-sync line. Fix one line without touching the others.
- Edit words, keep timing. Fixing a typo doesn't move anything.
- Same engine for preview and export. What you see in the preview is what's in the file.
It's free to try at 720p.
FAQ
Why do lyrics appear early in my lyric video? Usually because the tool times whole lines. A line appears when the tool thinks it starts, and if the singer comes in late or after a breath, the words show up early. Word-level timing fixes this.
How do I fix Suno lyrics out of sync? Re-time the lyrics against the final audio with a tool that aligns the lyrics you paste. Suno's own video can drift after extends and trims.
What's an acceptable lyric sync error? Under about 100 ms is hard to notice. Around 250 ms starts to feel slightly off, and half a second or more looks clearly wrong.
Can I fix sync in CapCut or Premiere? Yes, by moving each caption by hand on the timeline. It works, but on a full song it takes a while. A lyric video generator with word-level alignment does it automatically.
